Ear Wax Colours: What They Mean for Your Ear Health

Earwax might not be something we think about often, but it can tell us a surprising amount about our ear health. From texture to colour, the wax your ears produce is a natural part of the body’s self-cleaning system. It helps protect the ear canal by trapping dust, debris and even bacteria. But while earwax is perfectly normal, changes in its appearance can sometimes be a sign that something isn’t quite right.

At Tranquil Hearing Care, we believe understanding what your earwax is telling you can help you take better care of your hearing.

What’s Normal When It Comes to Earwax?

Earwax, also known as cerumen, comes in a range of colours and textures. For most people, it falls somewhere between yellow and brown, with consistency that ranges from soft and sticky to dry and crumbly. Both are completely normal.

Factors like age, diet, environment, and even genetics can influence the type of earwax you produce. For example, younger people tend to have softer, lighter wax, while older adults might notice darker, harder wax.

A Guide to Earwax Colours

Here’s what different earwax colours can indicate:

Light Yellow or Orange

This is the most common colour for healthy earwax, especially in children and younger adults. It usually means your ears are doing their job and there’s no need to worry.

Dark Brown or Black

Darker earwax is typically older wax that’s picked up more debris over time. It’s also more common in adults, especially those who work in dusty or polluted environments. If it becomes hard or impacted, it may affect your hearing and require professional removal.

White and Dry

Some people naturally produce dry, white earwax due to their genetic makeup. It’s more common in East Asian populations and is usually nothing to be concerned about.

Green or Yellow-Green

If your earwax looks greenish or has an unusual odour, it could be a sign of an ear infection. In this case, it’s best to book a consultation to rule out any underlying issues.

Red or Bloody

This might indicate a scratch or injury inside the ear canal, possibly from using cotton buds or other objects. It could also suggest a burst blood vessel or even a ruptured eardrum. If you notice this, it’s important to get it checked.

Runny or Watery Earwax

Very runny wax can sometimes be a sign of an infection, especially if accompanied by discomfort or a feeling of fullness in the ear. It may also indicate a perforated eardrum if fluid is leaking from deep within the ear.

When to Seek Help

Changes in the colour or texture of your earwax don’t always mean something is wrong, but if you’re noticing discomfort, hearing changes, or a persistent blockage, it’s worth having your ears looked at.

At Tranquil Hearing Care, we offer safe, professional earwax removal using microsuction – a quick and gentle method with no water or mess. Our experienced audiologist, Jude Borquaye, can assess your ear health and help you decide if treatment is needed.
