Can a bad diet cause hearing loss?

We all know a healthy diet is vital for overall well-being, but did you know it could also play a significant role in maintaining your hearing health? At Tranquil Hearing, we specialise in providing hearing solutions, but we also believe in empowering our clients with knowledge about preventative care.

In this article, we’re going to take a closer look at the relationship between diet and hearing loss, and how simple changes to your eating habits could make a real difference.

The Link Between Nutrition and Auditory Health

While age and noise exposure are primary culprits in hearing loss, emerging research suggests that dietary choices can also influence auditory function. Our ears, like any other part of the body, require a steady supply of nutrients to function optimally. A poor diet, lacking essential vitamins and minerals, can compromise the delicate structures within the inner ear, leading to hearing decline, and in some cases, tinnitus.

In fact, a study published in Ear and Hearing, the official journal of the American Auditory Society, found that higher intakes of vitamin B12 were associated with reduced odds of tinnitus, while higher intakes of calcium, iron, and fat were linked to an increased risk. The study also highlighted dietary patterns high in protein and rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean meats as protective against both tinnitus and hearing difficulties. Read the full study here.

Another study, published in the National Library of Medicine, echoes these findings. It identified deficiencies in key micronutrients, such as vitamins A, B, C, D, and E, as well as zinc, magnesium, selenium, iron, and iodine, as being linked to an increased incidence of hearing loss. Poor dietary habits, including high intake of carbohydrates, fat, and cholesterol, or low protein intake, were also associated with poorer hearing outcomes. View the study here.

Nutrients That Nourish Your Hearing

Several key nutrients have been identified as crucial for maintaining healthy hearing, including:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish like salmon and tuna, omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties that protect the inner ear from damage.

  • Antioxidants (Vitamins C and E): These combat free radicals that damage the cochlea’s hair cells. Get them from fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

  • B Vitamins (especially B12): Support nerve function. A deficiency in B12 has been linked to both tinnitus and hearing loss.

  • Zinc: Aids cell repair, including in the inner ear. Found in oysters, red meat, and poultry.

  • Magnesium: Improves blood flow to the ear, shielding it from noise damage. Leafy greens, nuts, and whole grains are great sources.

  • Vitamin D: Emerging evidence suggests it may help protect against hearing difficulties.

The Impact of a Poor Diet

Conversely, a diet high in processed foods, saturated fats, and sugar can increase the risk of hearing problems. This kind of diet may contribute to:

  • Inflammation: Damaging delicate inner ear structures.

  • Cardiovascular Issues: Restricting blood flow to the auditory system.

  • Oxidative Stress: Leading to damage of hair cells responsible for hearing.

  • Diabetes: High blood sugar levels can impair blood vessels, including those in the inner ear.

Making the Right Dietary Choices for Your Hearing

While more research is always welcome, the evidence is clear: good nutrition supports better hearing. To protect your auditory health:

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables

  • Choose lean protein (especially fish and poultry)

  • Cut back on processed foods, sugar, and saturated fats

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Ensure you're getting enough key nutrients, including B12, magnesium, and vitamin D
